Keep Up The Good Walk

Posted on July 23rd, 2005 by Y.G. in Exercise Tips, Weight Loss, Working Out

Walking has been, for me and for many other people I know, a very efficient, basic and easy-to-practice way of inserting exercise in my life and weight loss journey. Since then, I’ve moved for the most part to more “intense” types of exercise, but having a walk or even a run here and there still remain things I like to do regularly enough, when going to the gym doesn’t seem appealing or when I need a break from the same-old, same-old cardio exercises on the stationary bike. After all, it causes the whole body to work and keep its balance, and walking can be practiced by almost everyone, even if suffering from arthritis, back problems or other ailments that tend to prevent a person from doing “heavy” sports.

It may be for you like it is for me, though: that you do something more easily when you can measure your progress, how far you’ve walked, and so on. Exercise being an important part of weight loss, in my opinion, here are thus a couple tools that I’ve found useful, if only for this feeling of progressing (it may seem childish in a way, but if it works, that’s the main thing):

The Eowyn Challenge: No need to obsess over The Lord of the Rings to enjoy its use, knowing the books will simply give you a better “inner feeling” grasp on it. Basically, it lets you pick one of the LOTR travels (from County to Rivendell being the default one, but you can go from Rivendell to Lorien or push to Gondor if you like), and log in how many miles you walk, until you reach this goal. You can then set up another one.

Google Maps Pedometer: A useful tool for those who want to record where they departed from, and where they walked to. Also includes a calories tracker (approximative, of course).

Happy walking!
